Saudi Arabia Driving Licence Overview

Driving licences in Saudi Arabia are issued by the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT). For expatriates, licences are typically tied to Iqama validity and renewed annually.

Renewing Online via Absher

Most Saudi driving licence renewals can be completed through Absher (أبشر) or the Elm (إلم) platform — no office visit required.

  • Current driving licence (valid or recently expired)
  • Valid Iqama
  • Eye test certificate (required for drivers over 60)
  • Passport copy

Step-by-Step Renewal

  1. Log in to Absher (absher.gov.sa) or the Absher app
  2. Go to My Services → Traffic Services → Renew Driving Licence
  3. Check for any outstanding traffic violations (must be paid first)
  4. Pay the renewal fee online (SADAD or credit card)
  5. Download your digital licence immediately — physical card mailed within 10 business days
